A 100 HP, 3-phase, 600V motor draws approximately 125 amps at full load, or roughly 130 kVA. For across-the-line starting, the transformer must handle 6–8x inrush current momentarily. If using a Motor Starting Autotransformer (reduced voltage), the transformer feeding it should be sized at a minimum of 150 kVA, with 200 kVA recommended for continuous operation with multiple starts per hour. For direct-online starting without a motor starter, the distribution transformer should be sized at 200–300 kVA minimum to prevent excessive voltage sag. Yes — virtually always. Variable Frequency Drives are a primary source of harmonic current distortion (primarily 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th harmonics). These harmonic currents cause additional heating in transformer windings that standard transformers are not designed to handle. As a rule, any manufacturing facility with more than 20–25% of the load consisting of VFDs, servo drives, or other non-linear loads should specify a minimum K-13 rated transformer. Underestimating K-factor requirements is one of the leading causes of premature transformer failure in manufacturing plants.

An isolation transformer provides complete galvanic isolation between primary and secondary windings — critical for protecting sensitive control equipment, eliminating ground loops, and ensuring personnel safety. They are used where electrical separation is required by code or specification. An autotransformer shares a common winding between primary and secondary, making it more compact and economical for voltage conversion (e.g., 600V to 480V for imported machinery), but does NOT provide isolation. For machine tool control circuits and safety-critical applications, isolation transformers are the correct choice. For bulk voltage step-down where isolation is not required, autotransformers offer significant cost savings.

Yes. All Transformer Source units are rated for continuous duty at 100% of nameplate kVA within the specified ambient temperature range (standard: 40°C). For manufacturing plants running multiple shifts or 24/7 production, we recommend sizing transformers at 80% of maximum anticipated load to provide thermal headroom and extend service life. Specify the actual operating cycle and peak load profile when requesting a quote for large custom units.

Food processing facilities require transformers that can withstand regular washdown cleaning, high humidity, and potential exposure to oils, acids, and cleaning chemicals. We recommend fully encapsulated (resin-cast) transformers for transformer ratings up to 150 kVA — these units have no exposed windings and can be hosed down. For larger units, specify NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X stainless enclosures with sealed terminal compartments. NEMA 12 is not sufficient for washdown environments. For ammonia refrigeration areas, consult our technical team for appropriate materials and coatings.

This is one of the most common requirements in Canadian manufacturing. The solution is a step-down autotransformer or isolation transformer with a 600V primary and 380V, 400V, 415V, or 460V secondary (depending on the machinery nameplate). Transformer Source offers standard and custom units for all common import voltage configurations. For machinery with onboard 24V control circuits or sensitive electronics, an isolation transformer is preferred over an autotransformer to prevent ground faults from propagating. Please provide the machinery nameplate kVA, voltage, and phase configuration when requesting a quote.

Standard in-stock units (isolation transformers, control transformers, autotransformers in common kVA ranges) typically ship within 1–3 business days from our Canadian warehouse. Custom-wound units with non-standard voltages, special enclosures, or high kVA ratings (above 500 kVA) have lead times of 4–12 weeks depending on complexity. Motor starting autotransformers in standard HP ratings are generally stocked. Contact us to confirm current stock levels before your project schedule is set.

Transformer Source offers units compliant with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) energy efficiency regulations and equivalent U.S. DOE 2016 standards for distribution transformers. Compliant units use premium-grade silicon steel cores with lower no-load losses. If your project qualifies for energy efficiency incentives from your provincial utility, specifying NRCan-compliant units may be required.
